In order to fix the problem we need to admit that there is a problem. We need to talk about it. We need to document it. We need to brainstorm solutions. Then we need to seed those solutions and make them realities.
Committed to promoting social change in Southwestern Pennsylvania, WGF works to raise awareness of fundamental social inequalities to the media, to voters, to public officials, and corporate and nonprofit leaders. WGF engages in advocacy not just to highlight current inequities but more importantly to aide the community in discovering viable solutions that will create sustained equity for all citizens.
In 2004 -2005 WGF:
- Made front page news of the lack of women in local politics, the lack of women on corporate and public boards, and the gendered wage gap as significant regional issues effecting economic growth and regional viability.
- Commissioned research by Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School and The University of Pittsburgh Center for Social and Urban Research to quantify gender inequity in the current appointment system for public boards, and advocating for reforms to the system which would result in increased equity, based on best practices from throughout the country.
- Enacted important legislation. Working with City Council through Pennsylvanians for Fair Representation (PFR), and over 60 partner organizations, WGF was instrumental in successfully passing legislation implementing a “fair and open” appointment process for public boards within the city of Pittsburgh.
