Who are we?
The Regional Change Agents are a diverse group of 15 girls from across Allegheny,Fayette, Greene and Washington counties representing different neighborhoods, schools, religions, races, ages, and sexual orientations, but what we have in common is a desire to make our communities a better place for girls to thrive. We have been trusted with $20,000 which we will grant away to other girls in our communities to run programs to benefit girls right here where we live.
Who should apply for grant money?
Groups of girls and young women who are:
- Between the ages of 13 and 18.
- Interested in leading a new project in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene or Washington County that will benefit other girls.
- Working with an adult advisor (who is not related to any of the members of the team)
- Mixed-gender groups can apply if they are led by girls.
How do you ask for grant money?
Here is a suggested plan of action:
- Go to www.girl2girlgrants.com to download and print the grant application, or call 412-434.4883 and WGF’s staff will happily mail you an application.
- Review our grantmaking priorities.
- Think about a fabulous project that you think fits these goals.
- Be clear about what your project is.
- Identify other team members.
- Find an adult advisor.
- Submit your application by September 20, 2009 to:
Regional Change Agents
c/o Women and Girls Foundation
425 Sixth Avenue, Suite 1860
Pittsburgh, PA 15219
How much money can you ask for?
Each team can request up to $2,000 in support. A total of $5,000 in grant money is available for each county.
What if you are working with a nonprofit organization that is either applying for or is currently using grant money from WGF?
It is not a problem. A nonprofit organization’s involvement in a Regional Change Agents funded project does not disqualify that organization from seeking its own funding.
What kinds of projects or programs will we fund?
We are particularly interested in breaking down gender stereotypes and in creating new opportunities for girls right here in Southwest PA.
We are interested in girl-led programs that:
- Encourage community dialogues that challenge stereotypes
- Promote unity and diversity in the female community
- Consider gender in relation to race, sexual orientation & socio-economics
- Develop prevention initiatives run by girls for girls (e.g. pregnancy, abuse, rape)
- Advocate for increased girls’ rights and opportunities in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties!
Some examples might be:
Girls Leadership
Increase girls’ community leadership opportunities & make news, politics and voting
relevant to girls’ lives
Math, Science & the Environment
Create fun and exciting ideas to get girls interested in math, science & the environment
Sports
Advocate for equal funding and support for girls’ sports in schools
Bullying and Violence
Develop a community forum around bullying and violence issues that girls face
Teen Health
Develop prevention initiatives run by girls for girls (e.g. drug and alcohol abuse, teen
pregnancy, etc.)
What can’t we fund?
- Scholarships for individual girls
- Activities that promote a particular political party or a candidate for public office
- Religious organizations for religious purposes
- Adult-led lecture series
- Projects taking place outside of Allegheny, Fayette, Greene or Washington County (Multi-county projects are OK; in fact, we would be excited to learn of a project that covered more than one county.)
If your project is funded, when would you receive the grant money and complete the program?
Funding decisions will be mailed out December 1, 2009. Projects should begin during the 2009/2010 school year.
