Who are we?
The Allegheny County Girls as Grantmakers is a diverse group of 24 girls from across Allegheny County representing different neighborhoods, schools, religions, races, ages, and sexual orientations, but what we have in common is a desire to make our community a better place for girls to thrive. We have been trusted with $10,000 which we will grant away to other girls in our community to run programs to benefit girls in Allegheny County. This two-year program is a collaboration of The Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania, FISA Foundation, Eden Hall Foundation, and the Jewish Women’s Foundation.
Who can apply for grant money?
Groups of girls and young women who are:
- Between the ages of 13 and 18
- Interested in leading a new project in Allegheny County that will benefit other girls
- Working with an adult advisor (who is not related to any of the members of the team)
- Mixed-gender groups can apply if they are led by girls
How do you ask for grant money?
Here is a suggested plan of action:
- Go to www.girl2girlgrants.com to download and print the grant application,
or call 412-434-4883 and we will happily mail you an application. - Review our grantmaking priorities.

- Submit your application by May 1, 2006:
Girls as Grantmakers
c/o Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania
425 Sixth Avenue, Suite 1860
Pittsburgh, PA 15219
How much money can you ask for?
Each team can request up to $2,000 in support. A total of $10,000 in grant
money is available.
What if you are working with a nonprofit organization that is either applying for or is currently using grant money from WGF?
It is not a problem. A nonprofit organization’s involvement in a Girls as Grantmakers funded project does not disqualify that organization from seeking its own funding.
What kinds of projects or programs will we fund?
We are particularly interested in breaking down gender stereotypes and
in creating new opportunities for girls, especially in the focus areas of: Politics, Math & Science, and Sports.
We don’t expect your project to do all of these things, but your project should aim to achieve at least one of these incredible outcomes!
Politics:
- Increase the number of girls/young women who are registered to vote
- Increase girls’ awareness of current events & make news relevant to girls’ lives
- Encourage more girls to think about running for office—within student government—or in government when they are old enough
Math & Science:
- Create fun and exciting ideas to get girls interested in math & science
- Make math and science real to real girls
- Promote awareness of women & girls who have succeeded in these areas
Sports:
- Advocate for equal funding and support for girls’ sports in schools
- Create additional opportunities for recreational sports for girls in the community
- Enhance community awareness of local girl accomplishments in sports
We are also interested in girl-led programs that:
- Encourage community dialogues that challenge stereotypes
- Promote unity and diversity in the female community
- Consider gender in relation to race, sexual orientation & socio-economics
- Develop prevention initiatives run by girls for girls i.e. pregnancy, abuse, rape
- Advocate for increased girls’ rights and opportunities in Allegheny County!
What won’t we fund?
- Scholarships for individual girls
- Activities that promote a particular political party or a candidate for public office
- Religious organizations for religious purposes
- Projects taking place outside of Allegheny County
- Adult-led lecture series
If your project is funded, when would you receive the grant money and complete the program?
Funding decisions will be mailed out June 30, 2006. Projects must occur during the 2006-07 school year.
